  • The Westow Desk: Blending Materials for Timeless Luxury

Where Traditional Craftsmanship Meets Modern Materials and Contemporary Design. The Westow Desk reflects Rebecca Scott Englands approach to design — combining materials, textures, and finishes in a considered and subtle way. Every line, surface, and material choice reflects our philosophy: balancing traditional craftsmanship with forward-thinking materials. It embodies what we do best — creating furniture that balances heritage with modern design In this post, we explore its design, the inspiration and the blend of materials that make this statement desk modern with a timeless edge. The Design Designed by Scott Glazebrook and inspired by the glamorous age of motor racing, the Westow Desk is a study in contrasting textures and materials. Masculine in feel, and with a hidden central drawer, its polished stainless steel frame sits alongside a carbon fibre top and an ebony-stained oak veneer body. What makes it truly tactile is this interplay of surfaces. Modern in its materials yet timeless in its form, it captures the essence of contemporary British design. The Materials Carbon fibre - a lightweight yet exceptionally strong material made from tightly woven strands of carbon filaments set within a resin. Originally developed for aerospace and automotive engineering, it’s now prized in furniture design due to its exceptional strength and lightness, allowing for a refined structural form without compromising durability. Polished stainless steel - a resilient, enduring metal with a smooth, reflective surface that seems to move with the light. It has a quiet elegance—strong yet inviting to touch — it frames the Westow desk’s design, accentuating its clean lines and precision. Ebony stained wood - a refined finish that enhances the natural character of the quarter-cut oak veneer. The stain deepens the tone while allowing the tight grain to show through, creating a surface that feels both contemporary and enduring. Why Material Choice Matters Selecting the right materials isn’t just about aesthetics — each one contributes to the desk’s design, functionality, durability, and tactile experience. Creating a dialogue between finish and form, carbon fibre offers resilience, its subtle woven pattern and soft sheen contrasting beautifully with the warmth of hand-finished ebony timber. The cool polish of engineered stainless steel adds precision and strength, bringing a crisp modernity to the piece. Together, these materials blend modern innovation with traditional craftsmanship, resulting in a desk that is clean, considered, and quietly luxurious. Bring the Westow Desk into Your Space Suitable for both modern and classic interiors, its layered materials, textures, and finishes create a focal point that embodies quiet luxury — a piece that celebrates British craftsmanship and is designed to endure for generations. Too beautiful to hide away, it is perfect for a study or as part of a drawing room setting, and can also be customised as a dual-sided partners desk to suit your space and needs. Craftsmanship & Harmony The Westow Desk exemplifies the quiet art of material harmony, every junction, and edge reflecting our commitment to craftsmanship — where design intent meets material excellence. The matte weave of carbon fibre, beside the highly polished stainless steel, the smooth warmth of the ebony stained wood framed by a metal edge, a piece that feels both handcrafted and enduring — a quietly sophisticated take on contemporary design. • Inside a Bespoke Bedside Table Project - A Case Study

At Rebecca Scott, we’ve been creating British-made furniture for over 28 years, combining traditional craftsmanship with a careful eye for materials and detail. Every piece we make is designed to endure, blending timeless style with functional elegance. Client Brief For this project, we were approached with a brief that included drawings and renders for two bespoke bedside table designs. The goal was clear: create pieces that complemented the interiors while offering their own individual character. Design Details The resulting designs showcase a thoughtful balance of form and function: Satin-finished black/dark bronze metal legs Natural leather upholstered tops, drawers and shelves Two styles, one with single drawer and shelf, the other with two drawers both featuring distinct handle details Each design was conceived to sit seamlessly within the space, yet possess a subtle individuality to elevate the room without overpowering it. Production Crafted entirely in the UK, these tables combine expert joinery, precision metal finishing, and fine leather upholstery. Factory images capture the tables mid-production, reflecting the meticulous care that goes into every bespoke creation. Interior by Laughland Jones Installation Once installed, the bedside tables bring a sense of quiet bespoke luxury and practicality. Reflecting on the project, Russell Jones, Design Director at Laughland Jones, commented: "Many bespoke elements made this interior truly unique, and a project that we are very proud of." It is always exciting to see our furniture in its final setting, and for this project it was particularly rewarding to see how our bespoke bedside tables helped contribute towards the client’s vision for a unique interior. Carefully designed to complement the brief, the materials, finishes, and craftsmanship come together seamlessly, sitting harmoniously within the wider scheme. • Outdoor Lighting Inspiration: Lanterns, Wall Lights & Pendant for Terraces & Gardens

A well-lit outdoor space has the same inviting feel as a carefully designed interior. From terraces and courtyards to outdoor dining areas, thoughtful lighting is often the element that makes the difference. When we think about outdoor lighting, it’s not just about practicality. It’s about creating layers of warmth and atmosphere. A soft glow at seating height makes a garden feel intimate. Wall sconces draw the eye to architectural details, while statement pendants above dining tables create a sense of occasion. Crystal Bakehouse wall lights For designers, the opportunity lies in treating exterior spaces with the same care as interiors — balancing task, ambient and decorative light to create environments that are both functional and welcoming. By evening, carefully considered lighting allows the boundaries between indoors and outdoors to dissolve. It’s about more than illumination; it’s about extending the comfort, elegance and rhythm of a home into the surrounding landscape. This journal explores how outdoor lighting can transform terraces, courtyards and dining areas into spaces that feel as thoughtfully curated as the interiors they connect to. Solar lanterns Effortless Ambience Few pieces are as versatile as an outdoor lantern, perfect for softening a lounge area, framing a pathway, or bringing atmosphere to a dining terrace after dark, they provide a refined alternative for flexible exterior spaces. Crystal Bakehouse wall lights Anchoring the Space Wall lights bring definition and structure, anchoring the lighting scheme to the architecture. They can highlight stonework, frame doorways, or mark transitions between zones. Singapore Moderne outdoor wall lights Beyond their practical role, they also contribute to the rhythm of an outdoor scheme — drawing the eye across a façade or guiding movement through a courtyard. When paired with portable lanterns, they offer both permanence and intimacy, ensuring the space feels designed rather than incidental. Neuilly chandelier, Project by InHouse Interior Design Making a Statement Just as a pendant or chandelier defines an area indoors, statement outdoor lighting sets the tone outside. Suspended fixtures above a dining table or seating area add sophistication, giving the space the same considered feel as any interior room. Together with layered lanterns and wall lights, they help a terrace feel like an outdoor living room — intentional, layered, and inviting. “Good outdoor lighting isn’t just about visibility — it’s about creating places where people want to linger, whether on a terrace at home or in a hospitality setting.” Singapore Moderne outdoor wall lights & pendants Function and Ambience Ultimately, outdoor lighting is less about brightness and more about atmosphere. The right mix of portable lanterns, architectural wall lights, and statement pendants allows designers to extend the comfort and rhythm of interior living into the landscape. By evening, the boundaries between inside and out begin to blur, and the terrace and garden become another room of the home.
